Alice Sutton’s label EDITION began during her final year of studying Fashion at the Canberra Institute of Technology in 2011.
Each of the collections explores the meaning of place and how this can be interpreted into wearable garments. The practice of interpreting place, along with the zero waste philosophy of Selvedge 2 Selvedge pattern making has informed the design aesthetic of EDITION.
The Selvedge 2 Selvedge pattern making philosophy explores the system of zero waste, incorporating the whole piece of fabric in the garment. Each garment begins with a story and concept which informs the Selvedge 2 Selvedge pattern making. This zero waste philosophy is a means for discussion into the role of sustainable design and the importance of a more sustainable fashion industry.
A key aspect of the design process is uncertainty as the final garment’s silhouettes are determined in the process not through drawings. Through each collection the EDITION label evolves and the unique, multifunctional garments develop to create a new language for sustainable design.
